White noise for sleeping, free to play

Press play and the steady hiss starts right here. No ads, no account, no time limit.

What is white noise?

White noise has the same energy at every frequency, so it sounds like a steady “shhh”, close to TV static or a fan on high. Because it is even, it covers sudden sounds such as a door, a dog or traffic.

What people use it for

  • Sleep: it masks the noise that wakes you up and becomes a cue that it's time to rest.
  • Babies: many parents use it to settle a baby, often next to a shush or a hair dryer sound.
  • Focus: it hides voices in an open office or a café.
  • Tinnitus and privacy: some people use it to cover ringing or to keep conversations private.

How to use it

Start at a low volume and turn it up only until the background noise disappears. If the hiss feels sharp, try pink or brown noise, which are deeper. To layer it with rain or a fan, open the web app.

With a baby

Keep the volume low, the phone or speaker at least 2 m (7 ft) from the crib and never inside it, and use a timer. See our baby white noise safety guide.

Questions

Is this white noise free?

Yes. It plays in your browser for free, with no ads and no account. It is generated live, so it never repeats a recording.

Will it play all night?

It plays until you press pause, as long as the tab stays open. Some phones stop browser audio when the screen locks; the Brezi iPhone app keeps playing with the screen off.

Is white noise or brown noise better for sleep?

It's personal. White noise covers more high-pitched sounds; brown noise is deeper and many find it softer. Try both on this site.
