What is brown noise?
Brown noise (also called red noise) puts most of its energy in the low frequencies. It sounds deeper and warmer than white noise, with no sharp hiss. The name comes from Brownian motion, not from the color.
What people use it for
- Sleep: many people find it easier to fall asleep to than white noise because it is less bright.
- Focus: it is popular for studying and deep work, to cover voices and street noise.
- Low noises: it masks rumbling sounds like traffic, an air conditioner or a neighbor's TV better than higher noises do.
How to use it
Use it at a low to medium volume, where it fades into the background. If it feels too muffled, try pink noise. In the web app you can mix it with rain or a fan.
Questions
Does brown noise help you focus?
Many people say it helps them concentrate, mostly because it covers distracting sounds. It isn't a treatment; just see if it works for you.
Is brown noise good for babies?
Some parents use it because it is soft. The same rules apply as with any sound: low volume, far from the crib and with a timer. See the safety guide.
What is the difference between brown, pink and white noise?
White is even and bright, pink is softer, brown is the deepest. Our noise colors guide explains each one and lets you listen.
