Why parents use the hair dryer
A hair dryer makes a loud, steady whoosh with a lot of white noise in it. Many parents notice that it calms a fussy baby, possibly because it is closer to the noisy environment of the womb than a quiet room. It's a classic tip passed from parent to parent.
Safer than the real dryer
A real hair dryer gets hot, uses power and has to stay near the baby. The recording does none of that, and you control the volume.
How to use it with a baby
Use the lowest volume that works, keep the phone or speaker at least 2 m (7 ft) from the crib and never inside it, and turn it off or down once the baby is asleep. A 2014 study found that infant sound machines at maximum volume can go above 50 dBA at about 30 cm (summary by CHOP). More in the safety guide.
Questions
Does the hair dryer sound really calm babies?
Many parents say so, but every baby is different. It isn't a treatment; if your baby cries a lot or you are worried, talk to your pediatrician.
Can I mix it with a shush?
Yes. Open the web app and add the shush on top, a combination many parents like.
Is it free?
Yes. It plays in your browser with no ads and no account.
